Originally designed to meet the requirements of the FIFA World Cup 2006, the stadium offers perfect conditions for football matches and concerts alike. Recently, the German national football team won a World Cup qualifying match in the Zentralstadion. Other big names who sold out the stadium were AC/DC, Paul McCartney and Genesis.
Talking sports, the highlight of the Zentralstadion with its approx. 43 500 seats has doutblessly been the FIFA World Cup. In 2006, the stadium was one of twelve German stadiums that were selected to host the championships. Since the Zentralstadion Leipzig fulfills all safety measures and regulations of the international football association, the stadium also hosts matches of local clubs that require high security standards in its turquois-coloured oval on a regular basis.

The centrepiece of the Sportforum Leipzig is able to unite tradition and modernity in a unique way. The former biggest German stadium stood exactly in the same location. With 100,000 seats it was the biggest stadium in Germany and world-famous as the "Stadium of the one hundred thousand". The Zentralstadion Leipzig of today was built inside these old stadium walls. The spectators reach their roofed seats on circular lower ranks as well as on both upper ranks via bridges that connect the new stadium on the historic walls.
The optical highlight of the new Zentralstadion Leipzig is the spectacular roof construction with its integrated flood-light facility. A perfectly tuned sound system ensures an outstanding acoustic. An innovative network of emergency escape routes ensures that little extra comfort and safety of its spectators.
In the future, the Zentralstadion Leipzig will be the home ground for the newly-established football club RasenBallsport Leipzig e. V. that was founded in 2009 deriving from the club SSV Markranstädt. RasenBallsport Leipzig e. V also holds the stadium's right to the name
